Teach Me What I Do Not See: Lessons for the Church From a Global Pandemic.James C. Wilhoit, Siang Yang Tan, Diane J. Chandler, Richard Peace, Ruth Haley Barton, Kelly M. Kapic & Steven L. Porter - 2021 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 14 (1):7-30.
In an attempt to learn from COVID-19, this essay features six responses to the question: what did COVID-19 teach us, expose in us, or purge out of us when it comes to spiritual formation in Christ? Each response was written independently of the others by one of the coauthors. Diane J. Chandler focuses in on how COVID-19 exposed grievous inequities for ethnic groups in the American church and broader society. Kelly M. Kapic reminds us of the goodness of human finitude (...)

Just before Nature: The purposes of science and the purposes of popularization in some English popular science journals of the 1860s.Ruth Barton - 1998 - Annals of Science 55 (1):1-33.
Summary Popular science journalism flourished in the 1860s in England, with many new journals being projected. The time was ripe, Victorian men of science believed, for an ?organ of science? to provide a means of communication between specialties, and between men of science and the public. New formats were tried as new purposes emerged. Popular science journalism became less recreational and educational. Editorial commentary and reviewing the progress of science became more important. The analysis here emphasizes those aspects of popular (...)

    Are Large Cardinal Axioms Restrictive?Neil Barton - 2023 - Philosophia Mathematica 31 (3):372-407.
The independence phenomenon in set theory, while pervasive, can be partially addressed through the use of large cardinal axioms. A commonly assumed idea is that large cardinal axioms are species of maximality principles. In this paper I question this claim. I show that there is a kind of maximality (namely absoluteness) on which large cardinal axioms come out as restrictive relative to a formal notion of restrictiveness. Within this framework, I argue that large cardinal axioms can still play many of (...)

“But I Am Afflicted” Attending to Persons in Pain and Modern Health Care.Sarah Jean Barton & Brett McCarty - 2023 - Christian Bioethics 29 (3):177-182.
Over one in five adults in the United States and around the world are estimated to live with chronic pain. How are we to attend well to persons living with pain? This is a difficult, pressing question for both healthcare institutions and Christian communities, and it is only made more complex both by the contemporary opioid crisis and by how experiences of pain and addiction are shaped in the American context by race, gender, and class. Attending faithfully to persons in (...)

The Effects of Different Feedback Types on Learning With Mobile Quiz Apps.Marco Rüth, Johannes Breuer, Daniel Zimmermann & Kai Kaspar - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Testing is an effective learning method, and it is the basis of mobile quiz apps. Quiz apps have the potential to facilitate remote and self-regulated learning. In this context, automatized feedback plays a crucial role. In two experimental studies, we examined the effects of two feedback types of quiz apps on performance, namely, the standard corrective feedback of quiz apps and a feedback that incorporates additional information related to the correct response option. We realized a controlled lab setting (n= 68, (...)

Styles of rationality.Ruth Millikan - 2006 - In Susan Hurley & Matthew Nudds (eds.), Rational Animals? Oxford University Press.
By whatever general principles and mechanisms animal behavior is governed, human behavior control rides piggyback on top of the same or very similar mechanisms. We have reflexes. We can be conditioned. The movements that make up our smaller actions are mostly caught up in perception-action cycles following perceived Gibsonian affordances. Still, without doubt there are levels of behavior control that are peculiar to humans. Following Aristotle, tradition has it that what is added in humans is rationality ("rational soul"). Rationality, however, (...)

The Hebrew Version of De celo et mundo Attributed to Ibn Sīnā.Ruth Glasner - 1996 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 6 (1):89.
The Hebrew text On the Heavens and the World, ascribed to Ibn S, is an interesting and intriguing composition. It dates from the 13th century and was quite influential. It is not a translation of any text of Ibn S known to us, but is related to the Latin De celo et mundo, which appears in the 1508 Venice edition of translations of Ibn S. The Latin and Hebrew texts differ widely and the relation between them is far from being (...)

    Feminism, Policy and Women's Safety during Australia's ‘War on Terror’.Ruth Phillips - 2008 - Feminist Review 89 (1):55-72.
The main argument in this article is that the Australian government in power from 1996 to November 2007 failed women's domestic security by denying the central policy role of women's organizations in the struggle against domestic violence and by successfully expunging public debate on gender issues in Australian governance, while participating in the ‘war on terror’ to guard national security. In bringing together a discussion about the war on terror and the importance of feminism for women's security, key issues about (...)

Congo style: from Belgian art nouveau to African independence.Ruth Sacks - 2023 - Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press.
Congo Style presents a postcolonial approach to discussing the visual culture of two now-notorious regimes: King Leopold II's Congo Colony and the state sites of Mobutu Sese Seko's totalitarian Zaïre. Readers are brought into the living remains of sites once made up of ambitious modernist architecture and art in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. From the total artworks of Art Nouveau to the aggrandizing sites of post-independence Kinshasa, Congo Style investigates the experiential qualities of man-made environments intended to entertain, (...)
